The Arbitrum rollout is seeing growing adoption among decentralized finance (DeFi) applications due to its high throughput and low gas fees. As the ecosystem expands, you may have come across tokens like USDC.e and WETH and wondered - what are these exactly and why do they exist? This article breaks it down.
The Need for USDC.e
USDC is a popular stablecoin pegged to the US dollar. When Arbitrum launched, it did not yet support native USDC issuance.
To fill this gap, developers created USDC.e, a version of the USDC token bridged from Ethereum. This allowed stablecoin functionality for early DeFi apps on Arbitrum.
However, Arbitrum now supports native USDC. Theoretically, USDC.e should be phased out in favor of direct USDC. But in reality, many existing projects still rely on USDC.e. Removing it completely is not yet possible.
For the foreseeable future, both USDC.e and USDC will coexist on Arbitrum. Think of USDC.e as a legacy workaround, with USDC being the preferred stablecoin moving forward.
Key Differences
While USDC and USDC.e have the same value, there are some key nuances:
Backing: USDC is directly backed and supported by Circle, the company behind the USD Coin. USDC.e relies more on the bridge stability.
Ecosystem Compatibility: USDC has superior integration for native Arbitrum DeFi apps.
Bridge Risk: USDC.e depends on the Arbitrum bridge, which poses smart contract and congestion risks.
Over time, developers will likely migrate dApps to direct USDC support. But for now, keep these differences in mind.
Introducing Wrapped Ether (WETH)
WETH stands for Wrapped Ether - an ERC-20 token with a price equal to ETH. It functions similarly to USDC.e by extending ETH's capabilities on Arbitrum.
Think of WETH as packing ETH into a format compatible with Arbitrum's ecosystem, especially DeFi apps requiring ERC-20 tokens.
Key highlights:
Pegged 1:1 with ETH
Enables ETH to be used for DeFi transactions on Arbitrum
Much lower gas fees compared to transacting directly with ETH
Converting ETH to WETH
There are decentralized cross-chain services enabling conversion from ETH to WETH specifically for utilizing Arbitrum:
RenBridge: A popular decentralized bridge supporting swaps between many chains.
Synapse Protocol: Offers fast transactions and low gas fees for ETH to WETH swaps.
Via Protocol: An efficient travel agent finding the cheapest route and fees for securely packing ETH into WETH form for Arbitrum.
Hop Protocol and Orbiter: Specialized liquidity solutions to exchange ETH for WETH on Arbitrum.
By understanding USDC.e and WETH, DeFi users can better navigate Arbitrum's opportunities while avoiding confusion.
